Education Has Always Been An Imperative Aspect Of The

Education has always been an imperative aspect of the American identity. To be educated is to be successful. Despite the emphasis that is placed on education, there are certain barriers that have stalled the equal distribution of knowledge. One of those major barriers is racism. The United States of America has had institutionalized racism in schools for decades; with more advantages being offered to white students instead of minorities. Thankfully, things have greatly changed since the days of Jim Crow. Yes, it is evident that there still remains underlying issues of race in our country; however, when it comes to America’s education system, the land of the free has succeeded in integrating its schools and giving everyone the†¦show more content†¦Compared to â€Å"colored only† schools, white schools were high class and had an abundance of supplies for their students. On the other hand, African American schools were underfunded and lacked essential materi als. It was as if the education system of the early twentieth century of America was basically set up to have the white students succeed, and the African American students fail. This was a deep thought that resonated with African American community authors such as Richard Wright- author of Black Boy- explained through the literature â€Å"Yet I knew . . . that none of my dreams was possible. Then I would hate myself for allowing my mind to dwell upon the unattainable† (Wright 157). Richard Wright was an intellectual black boy who wanted nothing more than to learn. His novel is not completely factual but some events that occur do depict actual situations that an African American student may have faced in the early 1900’s. For example, Richard only went to school up until the ninth grade, a common occurrence within the race as it wasn t seen as a necessity for African Americans to be completely educated.
